How often are the practices? Practices are typically an hour once a week. On the registration form, you can indicate the nights you have a conflict, and we place you on a team that works with your schedule.
When are games? Games are on the weekends, usually Saturday. We do schedule some weeknight games later in the season in lieu of practices, so the commitment is not more than 2 hours per week.
Where are the practices and games held? All activities are held at the outdoor roller hockey rink in Pinckneyville Park – 4707 S. Old Peachtree Rd. in Norcross.
My child has a friend who is signing up. Can they be on the same team? Chances are, yes. While we can’t always guarantee it, we make every effort to place kids who want to play together on the same team, and are usually successful.
Do girls play roller hockey? Yes! We have several girls playing in our league.
There is no checking or rough play in roller hockey, so girls and boys compete equally.
My child doesn’t skate very well. Should I still sign him/her up?. We have many beginners every season who are still developing their skating skills, and much of our coaching instruction is focused on skating. We believe the best way for kids to improve their skills is by playing.
What equipment is needed to play hockey? Players will need the following – hockey helmet , hockey gloves, elbow pads, shin guards, skates, a hockey stick and a mouthpiece.
How much will everything cost? Parents should figure on a minimum of $100 for the equipment.
Do you have any used equipment for sale? Yes, we have a number of used equipment items that we sell to people for a reduced fee. We also have new equipment that we’ve purchased on sale, and will sell to people at cost.
Can my child wear a bicycle or lacrosse helmet? No. Hockey helmets have a faceguard that protects your child from getting hit with pucks or sticks, so they are required.
What about soccer shin guards? Hockey shin guards must cover the knee, so soccer shin guards cannot be used.
We already have inline skates. Will those work? The skates are probably fine, but you may need to purchase different wheels. Skates often come with hard outdoor wheels designed for pavement and sidewalks. Our sport tile hockey surface requires softer wheels to grip the surface and provide traction.
What kind of hockey stick should I get? We do not recommend purchasing an expensive stick for beginners. Look for a 1 piece hockey stick made of either wood or a lightweight composite material. 2 piece sticks with a wooden handle and a hard rubber blade are insufficient for roller hockey use.
How long should the stick be? If your child is on skates, the stick should reach to his or her chin when held straight up and down. If a stick is too long, it can always be cut down.
